Ruth creates original decorative designs for harpsichord soundboards, combining her botanical painting skills with historical decorative techniques.

Her involvement in harpsichord decoration began in 2010 through a collaboration with Norwich harpsichord maker Alan Gotto. Since then, she has created individually designed instruments for clients in the UK and across Europe.

Every design is developed specifically for the instrument and its owner.

Flowers, birds, butterflies and other natural motifs can be incorporated into a composition that complements the shape and character of the soundboard.

Ruth works closely with the maker and client to understand their wishes and develop a design that feels personal while respecting the traditions of the instrument.

Harpsichord decoration has a rich visual history, and Ruth draws on the techniques and decorative language associated with historical instruments.

Her botanical knowledge allows her to create natural subjects with the delicacy and precision required for this specialist work.

At the same time, each new instrument provides an opportunity to develop an individual composition.
